description The purpose of this article is to analyse the influence of changes in regulations on polluted sites and soils and on landscape architecture in the rehabilitation of impacted brownfields. It calls for the development of a science of landscape architecture based on considering polluted soils in the design of site rehabilitation projects. The hypothesis developed is that the changes in regulations have modified over the decades the roles, processes, and components of landscape projects in site rehabilitation. The article first discusses the beginnings of the recognition of the risks related to contaminated sites with the development of the notion of pollution and the establishment, from the 1970s onwards, of installations classified for the protection of the environment (ICPE). It then presents the increasing stringency of regulations for all polluted sites and soils resulting from a proactive policy implemented from the 1990s and consolidated by the law of 2003 and the decree of 8 February 2007.
