Description
Summary:The findings of a collective research programme concerning grouped habitats in Central-Eastern Gaul have led to a reassessment of these modest settlements, in particular roadside settlements. Aerial surveys and preventive digs have jointly contributed to a significant corpus, enabling the conditions and chronology of their emergence to be explored, together with their organisation and functions. Built at the same time as the roads, in particular the new routes that were added to the pre-existing network from the Augustan era, these sites combine the economic functions of service and production while also enabling the accommodation of travellers. Although several hostels have been identified, it is the official reception buildings that attract attention here, many having been recently identified, notably in Saint-Moré (Yonne) and Langres/Freudenberg (Haute-Marne).
