| Summary: | The management of volcanic hazards was established in the 20th century by institutions situated between scientific observation of volcanic phenomena and surveillance to anticipate eruptions and protect the population. Founded after the devastating eruption of 1902, the Martinique Volcanological Observatory is the oldest example of this type of institution and is particularly relevant for understanding the ordinary intertwining of surveillance and observation. Indeed, Mount Pelee is an active volcano that, after two major eruptive phases in 1902 and 1929, evolved into a long period of rest. |
