description | Solastalgia, a term coined in 2005 by environmental philosopher Glenn Albrecht, refers to psychological distress in the face of environmental change or degradation. This article focuses on a particular geographical context in southern Arizona, USA, where the Tohono O’odham are opposing the construction of an open-pit copper mine in the Santa Rita Mountains. A study of the Tohono O’odham’s relationship to the landscape is used as an example to shed light on the process of solastalgia. The conceptual tools of cultural geography and landscape anthropology will be used to advance our knowledge of solastalgia. |
