description In a selection of 31 towns, we have separated those situated in lowlands from those located at altitude, and compared several parameters of biodemography. With almost 52,000 marriages having taken place in a period covering the 16th through the 19th centuries, we can present elements which are similar or different in these urban groups. In this way we seek to determine the impact of geographical parameters of the urban ecosystem on the structure of the populations. In the Dauphiné, most data indicate that the towns of the lowlands were on the whole dissimilar to those in the mountains, although the recorded distances are not great. For the spouse, similarity is the most important element in his choice, whereas for kinship there is a strong dichotomy, as the “mountain” towns have a much more homogenous gene pool. Finally, in this province altitude is less a factor of geographic isolation than an important element in the biological closure of the urban populations.
