Description
Summary:Ethnographic data result from anthropologist’s experience in the field and the theoretical and methodological positions he adopts. However, the researcher’s choices lean not only on clear reasoning, but also on unconscious beliefs or inhibitions produced in response to particularly stressful situations. Starting from the ethnography of an Indian mapuche association based in Santiago de Chile, this article aims to analyze the conditions of production of these materials. We will revisit the main impasses encountered in this fieldwork, in order to disclose these avoidance mechanisms, their effects on production data, but also the type of knowledge that can be identify, a posteriori, through the recovery of this repressed material. Finally, instead of considering them as methodological errors, this article aims to explore the epistemological potential of distress and its effects for anthropological knowledge.
