Description
Summary:“We called for Gastarbeiter, but human beings arrived.” Historical network analysis on the media discourse on Gastarbeiter in Austrian newspapers 1973 The following seminar paper analyses the media discourses about so-called Gastarbeiter in Austrian newspapers in 1973. As a methodological basis, the historical network analysis is applied, whereby all relevant newspaper article of the “Presse”, “Kurier” and “Arbeiter-Zeitung” will be examined and evaluated. The conclusion that emerges from the analysis is that, starting in September 1973, a media discourse developed in which the whereabouts and reduction of Gastarbeiter were discussed and Gastarbeiter became a political issue for the first time. However, the focus was never on the Gastarbeiter as people and individuals, with problems, fears and a self-determined future, but only on economic and social advantages or disadvantages for “Austrians”.
