Description
Summary:In this article, we present the translations into Polish of the works of Jacques Stephen Alexis, whose novel Compère général soleil and the collection Romancero aux étoiles appeared in Poland, respectively, in 1958 and 1974. In a historical approach, this study places the two publications in the broad sociocultural context ranging from the World Congress of Intellectuals for Peace (Wrocław, 1948) to the various editorial initiatives of the 1950s-1980s popularizing the literature of the South among the Polish readership. In addition to the ideological dimension of the interest in Alexis's writing, the aim is to show to what extent the translations of his works into Polish are part of the current of openness of the Polish culture of the time to the problematic of otherness. We try to highlight the influence of cultural events, the general public press and personal relationships in the process of cultural transfers between Haiti and Poland, within the framework of a worldwide transcultural circuit.
