| Summary: | This text attempts to list the various ways of characterizing an ancient building as a monument - through those who use it and thus made it so - which is the hôtel-Dieu in the town of Dole. Over the times, it was used for a charity hospital, then a hospital, later an old people’s home and a building site. Today it has become a culture centre and sight-seeing location or a place to stroll. For that purpose, three types of criteria were used. First, the concept of configuration, that is the relationship with characters and the type of answers given by these latter. This allows to understand the reasons why the hôtel-Dieu is regarded this way or that way by the people who accepted to give their own view about the monument during the enquiry in social sciences which we achieved in 2012, the four hundredth anniversary. Second, the “order of worth” as established by the sociologists Boltanski and Thevenot. This method allows to classify the various views of the hôtel-Dieu given by the people interviewed and the type of relationship each of them had with the place. The hôtel-Dieu then becomes either a domestic or a non commercial world, or an industrial world or an inspired world. Last, the interviews reveal a strong impact of space itself in the descriptions of the hôtel-Dieu. It is a “emplacement”. According to Foucault, “emplacement” means that relations between locations in space are the constitutive principle of space perception. Finally, what is the hôtel-Dieu ? What are its various modes of existence ? How are these transcribed through people interviewed’s speech ? This text is also an opportunity to redefine the notions and the use of the spoken contribution from people which has so far been made among the actors of cultural heritage. The authors of these lines refuse to regard the contributors as mere witnesses and ordinary on lookers. They would rather regard them as endowed with thought and reflexion, capable of a critical mind. In this particular case, the words collected about the hôtel-Dieu were by no means documentary or illustrative. |
