Description
Summary:A close relationship exists between nominal determination, achieved by grammatical means, and referentiation, which is primarily a cognitive concept. When using language to refer to extralinguistic elements – that is, concrete or abstract entities of the real world –, it is essential to make sure that one’s interlocutor is able to apprehend the nature and the identity of the entities in question. Based on an oral corpus, this study sets out to provide a phonological perspective on nominal determination. It focuses especially on a number of prosodic phenomena at the interface between the information structure of discourse and the construction of reference through grammatical means of determination. Segmental phenomena also invite us to reflect on the part played by articles in the process of referentiation.
