Description
Summary:In terms of facade design during the interwar period, the activity of Belgrade architects was imbued with layered influences of eclectic and contemporary expression. In line with this, many of the leading architects of this period, including Dragiša Brašovan (1887-1965) and Milan Zloković (1898-1965), incorporated facade plastic and sculptural decoration into their works. The stylistic development of ornamentation was conditioned by Academicist and Classicist tendencies on the one hand, and the emergence and popularization of Art Deco and Modernism on the other. This paper takes a representative selection of facade decorations from significant and distinguished buildings and competition projects created by Dragiša Brašovan and Milan Zloković during the 1920s and 1930s, with the aim of analyzing the contribution of sculptors whose creative work enriched their facades. In addition to the architectural compositions themselves, the decorative elements of the core components of the facade canvas have been analyzed, with the aim of fully elaborating their artistic significance.
