description Heritage and sustainable development, both widely accepted by the contemporary society, seem to proceed from the same logic : it is about better articulating the present and the future, in a logic of transmission and intergenerational solidarity. A cross study of Angers and Nantes, cities confronted with important construction pressure in a context of important population growth, tends to show that the convergence of heritage and sustainable development agendas is not obvious. While heritage is supposed to preserve designated elements, sustainable development can justify some necessary demolition in order to allow urban densification. The two notions of heritage and sustainable development seem however more interrelated in the case of Nantes than of Angers. This fact tends to be confirmed by the analysis of recent urban planning documents, the PLU (plan Local d’Urbanisme): while in Nantes the interest in new possibilities of local heritage preservation is obvious, in the case of Angers the densification process is predominant.
