description The excavations conducted over the last fifteen years gave us a better insight into the processes of the foundation of Autun/Augustodunum and its development under the Julio-Claudian dynasty. Despite undeniable advances in knowledge and the gradual clarification of the chronology and of the different kinds of settlements, it must be noted that only a small (around 1 %), unevenly distributed sample of the urban area has been excavated down to the earliest levels. This assessment is thus going to develop over the next few years with the current development-led excavations studying more in detail the most ancient levels within Autun itself, and with research excavations on the site of the extra-urban sanctuary, la Genetoye, whose underlying La Tène phase has recently been highlighted. It will be necessary to evaluate the part this area played in the transfert of the chief-town from Bibracte to Autun.
