Description
Summary:This article reviews the results of an ethnographic survey conducted in 2011 among inhabitants who regularly frequent areas in Rio de Janeiro listed in 2012 as part of the UNESCO world heritage. The results raised questions concerning the aesthetic, political and eco-symbolic relations established by the inhabitants with their living environment, on the one hand, and on the other hand, made it possible to draw a map of a “cultural landscape” as perceived by the inhabitants. The comparison of this cultural map with institutional maps makes it possible to interpret the issues involved in the carioca's “cultural landscape” and which lie somewhere between the individual perception of the environment and the cultural landscape models of the relationship between a group of people and its space. With this article we seek to contribute to the recognition of the potential of a landscape to represent the relationships between social groups and their territories and to work on the connections between the tangible and intangible as well as the individual and collective aspects of our contemporary societies.
