Description
Summary:Over the past decade, digital platforms have had a significant impact on the way we perceive and practice cities. Airbnb is one such platform. In this article, we'll look at how the expansion of the Airbnb platform is impacting, from a socio-economic point of view, the cities where it's setting up shop, and how institutions and local populations are organizing themselves to frame this development? To this end, we propose to focus on the territorialization of accommodations available on the Airbnb platform, as well as the socio-economic and political issues induced in two emblematic Mediterranean tourist cities: Barcelona and Lisbon. We'll analyze the spatial distribution of accommodations offered on Airbnb, their characteristics and cross-reference them with various socio-demographic data from these cities to measure the impact of the emergence and international development of the Californian platform. We will then look at the consequences of this process of territorial appropriation by various social groups and by the political actors in charge, taking into account the massive tourism context in our study areas. We will then examine the positioning of residents as users or providers of the Airbnb platform, and the opposition it may encounter. Finally, we'll look at the progressive framing and regulation of Airbnb.
