description The relationship between rural and urban in the formation and structuring of armed groups in Eastern Congo remains little questioned. This article fills this gap. It analyzes the direct and indirect engagement of urban residents of Uvira, a small town in South Kivu, in local armed groups in the region, often considered to operate from rural maquis. The article is based on various data: interviews with actors, observations on the places where armed groups operate, written documents, press sources as well as social networks. It shows that ex situ engagement, that is to say engagement in the city, away from the rural maquis, plays a very important role for the survival of armed groups: extension of networks, mobilization of resources and legitimization of the warrior enterprise through legal and symbolic actions.
