description | Τhis paper examines three Byzantine icons from the iconostasis of the church
of the Panagia tou Kastrou on Leros/Dodecanese, initially dated to the
sixteenth century and attributed to a Cretan workshop. However, certain
elements of their iconography and style point to their attribution to a
Constantinopolitan painter active in the first half of the fifteenth
century. In this context the island of Leros, as part of the Hospitaller
Island State (1309-1522), presents an interesting example of the osmosis
between Palaiologan and Western art and of artistic developments in areas
under Latin rule. |
