description Nanosized molybdenum carbide (β-Mo2C) synthesized by microwave irradiation method was applied for catalytic hydrogenation of naphthalene. Varying the synthesis conditions affects not only the phase composition and physicochemical properties of the resulting carbide but also makes it possible to regulate the selectivity for hydrogenation products. Samples synthesized in a short time (1–4 min) contain more acid sites due to the presence of molybdenum oxide and allow deeper hydrogenation of naphthalene to decalin compared to a pure-phase molybdenum carbide sample. The catalysts were characterized by XRD, nitrogen adsorption-desorption, SEM, TEM, XPS, and NH3-TPD. The key factors influencing the naphthalene hydrogenation were investigated. Under optimal conditions 100 % naphthalene conversion was obtained: 4 MPa hydrogen pressure, 1 h, 350 °C, catalyst Mo2C-4min-mono. The catalyst retains its activity for at least 5 cycles of hydrogenation.
