Summary: | As vocalizations are genetically determined, close phylogenetic species possess the same repertoire of homologous different calls. But their uttering patterns, their usage and also their vocal expression may differ according to socio-environmental constraints. These can be the size and the social structure of social groups, composition of sympatric species, physical structure of the milieu, and the strength of predation, pressure. We exemplified this last constraint for terrestrial cercopithecine’s species. They learned to strongly reduce their vocal activity. This adaptive silence leads some individuals to lose contact with their social group and to release isolation calls, even by adult males. The ultimate modification being a structural degradation of their cohesion calls. |
