Summary: | The eastern part of the forest of Sillé-le-Guillaume, located about 35 km northwest of Le Mans (Sarthe), is the subject of archaeological researches since 2004. First results show an iron production district dated between the second half of the 1st c. AD and the end of the 2nd c. AD. This short interval of time, the mass production and the regular distribution of workshops suggest that all of these sites have operated simultaneously. They are also contemporary with a villa discovered in the 19th c. a few hundred meters north of the forest. It has been created in the middle of the 1st c. AD. It knew several phases of expansion and reconstruction until its largest extension in the middle of the 2nd c. AD. Iron smelting slags are present everywhere. The study of a part of these wastes and recent discoveries show a forge activity on the site. The vicinity of the rural settlement with bloomery workshops and parallel development lead to establish a close relationship between the iron production district and the development of the villa. This may reflect an integration of iron production in the economy of fundus. |
