Summary: | In L’Education sentimentale, almost all reminders of what has already been narrated occur through the protagonist’s consciousness. The reminders of the final two chapters differ, however, by their dialogical character, as well as by their frequency, scope and range. Moreover, the manuscripts reveal that the writer hesitated, in this decisive moment, between explicitly or implicitly calling upon the reader’s memory. Examining these mnemonic regularities and variations helps us to define the role of narrative memory in the interpretative process during the act of reading the novel. |
