Summary:This article aims to analyse how The Sacrifice (2007) by James MacMillan fits into several literary and musical geographical spheres. The British anchoring lies in the choice of the hypotext of the libretto, but also through certain themes or musical and literary references which echo those of other British composers. However, if The Sacrifice by certain elements falls within the British tradition, other elements place it in the opera genre in general (arias, duets, choruses, etc.) or in other cultural spheres. Finally, the musical eclecticism of James MacMillan, which comes from different serious and popular traditions, will lead us to question how the music of the Scottish composer is rooted in the contemporary musical landscape.
