description | The gate of Potosi’s wak’a has opened to hell. For its long-term importance, St Bartolomé gorge (in Spanish, Quebrada de San Bartolomé) is one of the principal places of worship associated with the city of Potosi. The cross reading of ethnographic data, archaeological information and historical documents make it possible to reconstruct some stages in the evolution of the site’s meaning and its relation with Cerro Rico, from prehispanic times to present day. Beyond its contribution to the religious history of Potosi, the destiny of St Bartolomé gorge also offers the occasion to reflect on the social construction of space in the southern Andes. |
