description Between 2001 and 2011 a comprehensive study project was conducted at the Royal Institute for Cultural Heritage of Brussels (IRPA-KIK) on the artistic technique of “applied brocades” used in the southern Netherlands of the 1400s and 1500s.  This comprehensive study resulted in a published work entitled “Imitation and Illusion, Applied Brocade in the Art of the Low Countries in the Fifteenth and Sixteenth Centuries”.  The present article summarizes and updates the chapter on the technical study of applied brocades.  This study was conducted with the Laboratoire des Techniques Picturales of IRPA-KIK, and addresses in particular the materials and the structure of applied brocades.
