Description
Summary:Cultural tourism plays a significant role in promoting local economies and preserving cultural heritage. However, the success of cultural tourism initiatives hinges upon local communities' awareness and perception of their cultural heritage resources. While the potential for cultural tourism in the southern circuit of Tanzania is apparent, there is a lack of comprehensive research on the local community's awareness of cultural heritage resources. By using a qualitative approach through in-depth interviews, focus group discussion, and observation, this study investigates the awareness and perceptions of the local community towards cultural heritage in the Katavi Region. Findings suggest varying awareness and perceptions of cultural heritage resources within the local community. Specifically, while some participants exhibit high levels of appreciation and interest, others demonstrate limited awareness and uncertainty towards cultural tourism initiatives. Furthermore, factors such as education, socioeconomic status, and cultural identity influence individuals' attitudes toward appreciation of cultural heritage. The paper emphasizes inclusive strategies that foster local involvement and enhance the value placed on cultural heritage. These findings can help policymakers and stakeholders create specific interventions to improve awareness and community involvement in cultural tourism initiatives.
