description Abstract While populism remains rife in Europe, the continent is facing a new refugee dynamic. In the aftermath of the 2015–16 crisis, the EU is grappling with how to better address the challenges posed by Ukrainian immigration. Geopolitical changes and rising global inequality will further increase immigration in the future. It is often argued that immigration promotes populism and support for far-right parties, which can lead to political instability and disunity. This paper examines the relationship between regional differences in the 2015–16 refugee crisis and the success of the AfD in the 2017 federal election.
