Summary:Flaubert’s works are amongst those most often cited when, for one reason or another, a literary example is required. But why do we remember Flaubert so easily and so readily? Apart from the concrete reasons for this ‘memorability’ (the small number of works, their prominence in schools), there is also the fact that Flaubert activates the principles and mechanisms of what could be called the modern memory (fragmentary, evanescent, generalising) – both in his characters and for the reader.
