Summary: | To characterise “imagination in landscape design”, the study analyses a landscape project in the different phases leading to its realisation, the Matisse Park situated within the urban development project of Euralille. The study analyses the works undertaken and a variety of documents such as the specifications, collages, sketches, and discursive notes produced by the successive landscape architects in the conceptual design of this urban park. It sheds light on the different imaginary processes involved. The planning imagination of the Euralille head architect and planner, Rem Koolhaas, is interpreted in the light of several previous conceptual references from his career. The article then analyses the pursuit of the proposed itinerary and the divergences shaped by the successive landscape imaginations : that of Yves Brunier in the conceptual design, and that of Gilles Clément, from the Empreinte Agency, during the progressive formalisation of the project as it is today. The study characterises the imaginations deployed, and an interpretation of the successive journeys, attempts and events in the different phases of the project process. At the heart of this process are revealed the stages involved in the transfer from the ideal to the workable dimension. |
