Previous COVID-19 infection significantly reduces elastase levels in newly diagnosed pulmonary tuberculosis patients by Nancy Hilda Joseph, Alangudi Palaniappan Natarajan, Saravanan Natarajan, Chinnaiyan Ponnuraja, Madeshwaran A, Gunaparvathy I, Hemalatha P, Rajeshwari S, Lavanya Jayabal, Mahilmaran Ayyamperumal, Ramesh P. M., Luke Elizabeth Hanna

    Published 2025-07-01
“…As it has been discovered that Neutrophil extracellular traps (NETs) result in caseating granulomas in TB and pathology in COVID-19, we conducted this work to determine the amounts of NET molecules in the bloodstream and to comprehend their function during TB and subsequent SARS-CoV-2 infection.MethodsWe recruited 43 healthy volunteers, 40 newly diagnosed pulmonary tuberculosis patients who were negative for SARS-CoV-2 IgG antibody and 18 newly diagnosed pulmonary tuberculosis patients who were positive for SARS-CoV-2 IgG.ResultsAlthough Citrullinated Histone H3 and myeloperoxidase, did not show any difference in their levels, the NET marker elastase had significantly reduced circulatory levels in the tuberculosis group with SARS-CoV IgG positivity compared to tuberculosis group without SARS-CoV-2 IgG positivity.DiscussionThe substantial decrease in elastase levels observed in the diabetic cohort of TB patients with SARS-CoV-2 IgG positivity is intriguing and needs large cohort studies in the future to understand the influence of diabetes in TB patients exposed to SARS-CoV-2.…”

Musical auditory feedback BCI: clinical pilot study of the Encephalophone by Thomas A. Deuel, Thomas A. Deuel, James Wenlock, Alana McGovern, James Rosenthal, Juan Pampin

    Published 2025-06-01
“…Innovative technologies such as brain-computer interfaces (BCIs) have been developed recently that might benefit certain types of patients.MethodsHere, we tested a previously described auditory BCI, the Encephalophone, which may offer new options to improve quality of life and function. Eleven subjects with acquired moderate to severe motor disability, who had lost their ability to express themselves musically, were enrolled and 10 completed a clinical pilot study of the hands-free Encephalophone brain-computer interface (BCI). …”

IL-4 Receptor-Alpha Signalling of Intestinal Epithelial Cells, Smooth Muscle Cells, and Macrophages Plays a Redundant Role in Oxazolone Colitis by Jennifer Claire Hoving, Roanne Keeton, Maxine A. Höft, Mumin Ozturk, Patricia Otieno-Odhiambo, Frank Brombacher

    Published 2020-01-01
“…By deleting IL-4Rα on specific cell subsets shown to play a role in mediating colitis, we determined their role in a loss of function approach. Our data demonstrated that the loss of IL-4Rα signalling on intestinal epithelial cells, smooth muscle cells, and macrophages/neutrophils had no effect on alleviating the pathology associated with colitis. …”
