Influence of large-scale atmospheric circulation and Mediterranean sea surface temperature to extreme land precipitation: the case of storm Alex
Published 2025-01-01“…We first show that the mean effect of the observed atmospheric circulation pattern, an intense low-pressure system centered over the coasts of Western Europe associated with a cold pool and a secondary low-pressure system, can explain about 80% of the precipitation event magnitude. By contrasting the effect of Alex atmospheric circulation with an anomalously warm Mediterranean sea and eastern Atlantic ocean versus neutral sea surface temperature (SST) conditions, we show that the influence of September 2020 positive SST anomalies can explain a large fraction of the 20% residual precipitation over southeastern France and northern Italy. …”

Walking coral: Complex phototactic mobility in the free-living coral Cycloseris cyclolites.
Published 2025-01-01“…High-resolution time-laps captured the biomechanics of forward motion that appeared driven by three key factors: tissue inflation, which increased contact surface area for lift and friction; the ventral foot/pads, adjusting substrate interaction/friction; and the contraction and twisting of lateral peripheral tissues, which propelled the coral forward in a coordinated manner resembling the pulsed swimming motion of jellyfish. …”

Dynamics of a Self-Excited Vibrating Thermal Energy Harvester with Shape Memory Alloys and PVDF Cantilevers
Published 2024-12-01“…The vibrations are generated by a symmetrical system of two masses placed on the SMA filament, which moves transversely due to its own longitudinal temperature contractions and extensions. Temperature differences over a heat source of constant temperature are the cause of the periodic changes in length of the SMA filament. …”

Effects of Nopal Mucilage (Opuntia ficus-indica) as Plasticizer in the Fabrication of Laminated and Tubular Films of Extruded Acetylated Starches
Published 2021-01-01“…The films elaborated with nopal mucilage and glycerol present a homogeneous relief without breaking, adhesiveness, and contraction once formed. The elongation values of acetylated waxy maize starch films (33%) were higher than those of rice acetylated films (17%), while the blown films presented a 30% decrease in tensile strength, compared to the laminated films. …”

Leptin Modifies the Rat Heart Performance Associated with Mitochondrial Dysfunction Independently of Its Prohypertrophic Effects
Published 2018-01-01“…In our results, leptin induced an increased rate-pressure product as a result of increased heart rate and contraction force, as well oxidative stress. In addition, mitochondrial dysfunction expressed as a loss of membrane potential, decreased ability for calcium transport and retention, faster swelling, and less respiratory control was observed. …”
