Recent Decreasing Trends in Surface PM2.5 over East Asia in the Winter-Spring Season: Different Responses to Emissions and Meteorology between Upwind and Downwind Regions
Published 2021-02-01“…In addition to emission reduction, meteorology significantly modulated the level of PM2.5; it produced larger interannual variations in the downwind regions than the upwind one, accounting for changes in concentration as high as 35% and 45% in the SMA during winter and spring, respectively, versus 11% and 12% in the NCP. Finally, the downwind regions also showed more complex behaviors for the secondary aerosols, which did not always follow the decreasing trends of their precursors.…”

Influence of large-scale atmospheric circulation and Mediterranean sea surface temperature to extreme land precipitation: the case of storm Alex
Published 2025-01-01“…By contrasting the effect of Alex atmospheric circulation with an anomalously warm Mediterranean sea and eastern Atlantic ocean versus neutral sea surface temperature (SST) conditions, we show that the influence of September 2020 positive SST anomalies can explain a large fraction of the 20% residual precipitation over southeastern France and northern Italy. Finally, based on a storyline approach, we find that the dynamic component, the atmospheric circulation contribution to the extreme precipitation event, was more extreme than it would have been, had it occurred during the mid-20th century. …”

On the intrinsic value of democracy
Published 2025-01-01“…As a result, it is concluded that the intrinsic value of the democracy is evident only when we accept two ideals at once – individual self-government and political equality – and at the same time deny the existence and knowability of the substantive ideal of justice. Finally, the principle of decision-making by an absolute majority of votes is investigated as the principle underlying many normative justifications of the democracy. …”

Human, almost human: how many human species are there?
Published 2022-10-01“…Besides, taxonomists’ approaches are almost ritualistically divided between "lumpers" (who "lump" species together to reduce the number of species as much as possible) and "splitters" (who will often promote subspecies to the rank of species). Finally, while new methods such as cladistics and palaeogenomics are contributing promising tools and new results, it seems unlikely that they will be able to resolve all the difficulties involved in the classification and denomination of human species. …”

Network representations of drum sequences for classification and generation
Published 2025-01-01“…Second, we present a generative model based on Markov chains operating on the network structure, which is able to produce new drum patterns that retain the essential features of the training data.
