The impact of school closures on pandemic influenza:Assessing potential repercussions using a seasonal SIR model by Sherry Towers, Katia Vogt Geisse, Chia-Chun Tsai, Qing Han, Zhilan Feng

    Published 2012-02-01
“…  &nbsp We find that the effect on pandemic progression strongly depends on the timing of the start of the school closure. For instance, we determine that schoolclosures during a late spring wave of an epidemiccan cause a pandemic to become up to 20% larger, but have the advantage that theaverage time of the peak is shifted by up to two months, possibly allowing enough time for development ofvaccines to mitigate the larger size of the epidemic. Our studies thus suggest that when heterogeneity intransmission is a significant factor, decisions of public health policy will be particularlyimportant as to how control measures such as school closures should be implemented.…”

Climate Change, Grape Phenology, and Frost Risk in Southeast England by C. Llanaj, G. McGregor

    Published 2022-01-01
“…Although projections point to an improving climate for viticulture across Southeast England, frost will remain a risk for viticulture, albeit at a reduced level compared to the present. Furthermore, the strong cold-bias found for temperature simulations used in this study needs to be given careful consideration when using the UKCP18 projections for viticulture impact assessments of climate change. …”

What does external morphometry tell us about stock discrimination of Sardina pilchardus stocks from Türkiye? by Ozpicak Melek, Saygin Semra

    Published 2024-09-01
“…All samples were clearly separated from each other in the discriminant space, suggesting that there was no strong intermingling between populations. In addition, we would like to conclude that the morphological difference is not at the genetic level, and would like to emphasize the need for additional stock discrimination methods.…”

Characteristics of Water Vapor in the UTLS over the Tibetan Plateau Based on AURA/MLS Observations by Yi Sun, Quanliang Chen, Ke Gui, Fangyou Dong, Xiao Feng, Qichao Long

    Published 2017-01-01
“…It was found that high WV content in the UTLS over the southern Tibetan Plateau is more apparent in summer, due to monsoon-induced strong upward motions. The WV content showed the opposite distribution at 100 hPa, though, during spring and winter. …”

Will the Amaranthus tuberculatus Resistance Mechanism to PPO-Inhibiting Herbicides Evolve in Other Amaranthus Species? by Chance W. Riggins, Patrick J. Tranel

    Published 2012-01-01
“…Our hypothesis is that A. tuberculatus may have been predisposed to evolving this resistance mechanism due to the presence of a repetitive motif at the mutation site and that lack of this motif in other amaranth species is why PPO-inhibitor resistance has not become more common despite strong herbicide selection pressure. Here we investigate inter- and intraspecific variability of the PPX2 gene—specifically exon 9, which includes the mutation site—in ten amaranth species via sequencing and a PCR-RFLP assay. …”
