Spatial Patterns of Taxonomic, Functional, and Phylogenetic Diversity of Mammals in Southern Mexico by Cintia Natalia Martín‐Regalado, Mario C. Lavariega, Miguel Briones‐Salas

    Published 2025-01-01
“…As expected, we observed incongruence in spatial patterns among multidimensional biodiversity measurements (average of 68.7%). Species richness partially matched the global pattern, as topographic heterogeneity facilitated refugia and speciation in mountains, while productivity in lowlands supported a high number of species. …”

Habitat associations of six‐lined racerunners in longleaf pine managed with a short fire rotation for northern bobwhites by Isaiah W. Samek, Steven J. Price, Theron M. Terhune II, Darin J. McNeil

    Published 2024-12-01
“…Abstract The longleaf pine (Pinus palustris) savanna ecosystem is an imperiled, fire‐dominated community that supports exceptionally high levels of species richness and endemism. Area of this community has declined by more than 95% due to unsustainable logging, fire suppression, and changes in land‐use practices. …”

Detecting Fish Diversity in Urban‐Impacted Ecosystems: A Comparative Approach of eDNA Metabarcoding and UVC by Arthur Chung, Y. C. Kam, Stanley K. H. Shea, Celia Schunter

    Published 2024-11-01
“…We employ and compare two methods: 12S rRNA eDNA metabarcoding coupled with custom built reference database and simultaneous extensive underwater visual census (UVC) surveys. eDNA detected a higher species richness per site. Yet, each survey method featured a distinct species profile with associated trophic guilds, where 98 (32.3%) species found exclusively by UVC and 120 (39.6%) species detected only by eDNA. eDNA featured species from diverse habitats and evolutionary distances, including cryptic and large mobile fishes, offering enhanced prediction on local ecosystem functions. eDNA also recorded 90 putative species that had never been recorded in additional seven yearlong UVC dataset, with seven prospective new occurrence records to the territorial waters. …”

Historical biogeography and systematics of yellow-bellied toads (Bombina variegata), with the description of a new subspecies from the Balkans by Christophe Dufresnes, Simeon Lukanov, Sven Gippner, Johanna Ambu, Ilias Strachinis, Dragan Arsovski, Benjamin Monod-Broca, Hugo Cayuela, Petros Lymberakis, Daniele Canestrelli, Dan Cogălniceanu, Nikolay A. Poyarkov, Spartak N. Litvinchuk, Tomasz Suchan, Mathieu Denoël, Daniel Jablonski

    Published 2025-01-01
“…Abstract The Balkan Peninsula hosts a great proportion of Europe’s biodiversity, and this is well illustrated by amphibian richness and endemism. Among them, the yellow-bellied toad Bombina variegata has been a model in ecology and evolution, but several aspects of its phylogeography and taxonomy remain surprisingly poorly understood. …”

Rapid diversification of St-genome-sharing species in wheat grasses (Triticeae: Poaceae) accompanied by diversifying selection of chloroplast genes by Li-Na Sha, Ning Chen, Shi-Yong Chen, Yue Zhang, Yi-Ran Cheng, Dan-Dan Wu, Yi Wang, Hou-Yang Kang, Hai-Qin Zhang, Xiao Ma, Yong-Hong Zhou, Xing Fan

    Published 2025-01-01
“…While high level of genetic heterogeneity in plastome DNA due to a reticulate evolutionary event has been considered to link with the richness of the St-genome-sharing taxa, the relationship between the dynamics of diversification and molecular evolution is lack of understanding. …”

    Published 2025-01-01
“…Seagrass beds had higher abundance and biomass than unvegetated areas, but lower marine nematodes biodiversity. Species richness, evenness, and diversity indices in seagrass beds ranged from 2.00–3.56, 0.49–0.90, and 1.21–2.16, respectively. …”

Gross soil N transformations and microbial communities in Luxembourg beech forest (Fagus sylvatica L.) soils along a pH gradient by Mengru Jia, Annemieke Kooijman, Roland Bol, Wim W. Wessel, Kathrin Hassler, Albert Tietema

    Published 2025-02-01
“…Net N release was restricted to the mineral topsoil, shifting from low ammonium and nitrate release in acidic soils, to substantial nitrate release in calcareous soils, potentially supporting greater plant species richness at high pH. Our results demonstrate that soil N supply mechanisms differ markedly along the pH gradient, from low immobilization at low pH to high nitrification at high pH, driven by shifts in fungal versus bacterial dominance and their distinct N demands. …”

Artificial intelligence driven clustering of blood pressure profiles reveals frailty in orthostatic hypertension by Claire M. Owen, Jaume Bacardit, Maw P. Tan, Nor I. Saedon, Choon‐Hian Goh, Julia L. Newton, James Frith

    Published 2025-02-01
“…Expanding on the currently undefined orthostatic hypertension, our study uses continuous non‐invasive cardiovascular data to explore the full spectrum of blood pressure profiles and their associated frailty outcomes in community‐dwelling older adults. Given the richness of non‐invasive beat‐to‐beat data, artificial intelligence (AI) offers a solution to detect the subtle patterns within it. …”
