“… Este artigo tem como objetivos: 1) apresentar o conceito sociológico de competências profissionais que se desenvolveu a partir das profundas  transformações do mundo do trabalho nas sociedades  industriais capitalistas,   nas últimas décadas do século passado,  com a intensificação do processo de internacionalização dos mercados – globalização da economia – e com a  introdução de novas tecnologias – tecnologias da informação – conjugadas a novas técnicas de gerenciamento do processo de produção e de prestação de serviços, isto é, a partir da reestruturação produtiva, cujas características definem o novo perfil demandado do trabalhador pelas empresas tecnológica e organizacionalmente modernas;  2) demonstrar que a aquisição das novas competências profissionais, como  condição para a empregabilidade, isto é, para a candidatura a um emprego e a candidatura à manutenção do emprego, depende de maciços investimentos em educação escolarizada para melhoria de sua  qualidade em todos os níveis, mas  sobretudo e fundamentalmente,  no ensino fundamental e médio, para garantir aos jovens futuros trabalhadores a formação requerida pelos mercados de trabalho. …”
