Complexity: a new paradigm for fracture mechanics by A. Carpinteri, S. Puzzi

    Published 2013-04-01
“…Aim of this paper is at providing insight into the role of complexity in the field of Materials Science and Fracture Mechanics [2-3]. The presented examples will be concerned with the snap-back instabilities in the structural behaviour of composite structures (Carpinteri [4-6]), the occurrence of fractal patterns and self-similarity in material damage and deformation of heterogeneous materials, and the apparent scaling on the nominal mechanical properties of disordered materials (Carpinteri [7,8]). …”

Mechanisms of Alignment in Feeding Aphids on the Plant Stem by Ayumi Kudo

    Published 2025-01-01
“…In this study, I studied the variations in feeding postures of aphids and their mechanisms. My field observations revealed that the majority of individuals from most species fed facing downward, or more precisely, towards the roots. …”

Citrus Mechanical Harvesting Systems--Trunk Shakers by Fritz M. Roka, Reza J. Ehsani, Stephen H. Futch, Barbara R. Hyman

    Published 2014-09-01
“… While citrus growers are rightfully concerned about restoring the health of their HLB-infected trees, more study and consideration should be given to mechanical harvesting. The costs to grow and harvest citrus have been escalating significantly since 2006, and the cost savings potential from mechanical harvesting technologies can help Florida growers remain economically viable. …”

Study on the Lubrication of the Precision Ball Screw Mechanism by Zhang Zuoying, Zhang Lei, Jiang Hongkui

    Published 2015-01-01
“…The lubrication effects of two types of universal lubrication methods for ball screw mechanism are firstly discussed. For lubrication in oil,the variation situation of the thinnest lubricating oil film thickness vary with the ball screw rotation is figured out according to the Hamrock-Dowson expression and the fact that the ball screw always runs on conditions of boundary lubrication is identified by the calculation of the film thickness ratio. For lubrication in grease, the fluctuation curve of the ball speed responds to the ball screw rotation is figured out through the analysis of their mutual motion and geometric relationship. The curve demonstrates that using the grease to lubricate the ball screw mechanism with high rotation rate will cause higher temperature rise.To overcome the above two shortages,a dynamic grease coating lubrication method is proposed.Lastly,a friction torque stabilization test and a temperature rise test are conducted to prove the superiority of the proposed method.…”

Reconfigurable buffer mechanism in switch fabric design by Hui-qun HUANG, Qin-rang LIU, You-jun BU, Feng-yu ZHANG

    Published 2012-10-01
“…Current research focused on the theoretic buffer size of routers. The reconfigurable buffer tried to improve the buffer utilization rate to optimize the system performance based on the on-demand design of the reconfigurable system. In fact, for current switching fabrics with fixed buffers, cell loss under burst traffics still could not be resolved at some ports despite abundant buffers were free. The reconfiguration mechanism was introduced into buffers, which broke the private occupancy of buffers by single ports and reconfigured buffers due to the real-time requirements of per port.Analysis and simulation results show that the reconfiguration mechanism could resolve the problem of resource consumption effectively, and improve the ultilization of buffers as well as save buffers with the same anti-burst performance.…”
