Research on Slope Angle of Base for Asphalt-Concrete Core Dam by FAN Dongyang, WANG Junjie, LI Yuqiao

    Published 2023-01-01
“…This study takes Miaotang Reservoir in Wushan of Chongqing as an example and uses the nonlinear finite element method (FEM) to analyze the stress and deformation characteristics of concrete bases during the completion and impoundment periods and tensile stress graphs for different base shapes. The effort is to study the influence of the slope angle of the base for the asphalt-concrete core dam on its stress and deformation. The results show that during the completion period, the horizontal displacement, settlement, and principal stress of the base slowly increase as the upstream or downstream slope angle grows.During the impoundment period, the horizontal displacement and settlement of the base gradually decrease with the reduction in the upstream or downstream slope angle. In addition,a greater upstream slope angle can lower the principal stress while a greater downstream slope angle has the opposite effect. In the two working conditions, when the slope angle on both sides of the base increases at the same time, the value of compressive stress will rise, and the value of tensile stress will drop. The change in the slope angle on one side of the base has a stronger influence on the tensile stress graph than that on both sides. It is recommended to use a base with a larger slope angle on the upstream side and a smaller slope angle on the downstream side to improve the stress and deformation within the range of 58° to 90°.…”
