Laurence Housman (1865–1959): Fairy Tale Teller, Illustrator and Aesthete
Published 2011-03-01“…But, above all else, his fairy tale collections are among the illustrated books which contributed, at the turn of the century, to creating a golden age of book illustration (critics generally regard the 1890s as “the second golden age of illustration” in Great Britain, after the 1860s), an exceptional period during which illustration finally won acclaim as a newly-recognized art while Art Nouveau was gradually promoting new standards for artistic creation.…”

Secondary throughput maximization scheme for non-linear energy harvesting cognitive radio networks
Published 2023-02-01“…Aiming at a cognitive radio network (CRN) consisting of a pair of primary users and M pairs of secondary users, the secondary throughput maximization for CRN based on the non-linear energy harvesting model was studied.Specifically, in the case of considering secondary transmitter (ST) circuit power, the secondary throughput maximization (STM) problem with primary users’ throughput demands was first modeled as a non-linear optimization problem and then transformed into a convex optimization problem. Finally, a low-complexity algorithm combining the golden section and dichotomy was proposed.By applying this low-complexity algorithm, the optimal time allocation of the primary transmitter (PT)’s energy transmission and secondary users’ information transmission, and the optimal transmission power of PT were obtained. In addition, for the case of neglecting the ST circuit power, the convex property of the STM problem was first proved, and then a more efficient algorithm was designed to solve it.The simulation results show that compared with the equal time allocation method and the link gain priority method, the proposed design algorithm significantly improves the throughput of secondary users.…”

Re-envisioning Astraea: Myth and Vision in Jeremy Bentham’s “Blackstone Familiarized”
Published 2024-12-01“…After analysing the processes used to transcribe the vision by drawing on the “visual turn” recently taken in the field of law and literature, the article shows how Bentham’s rewriting leads us to reconsider the ideological functions of myth and seeks to account for the unexpected appearance of another allegorical figure, namely the goddess of fiction.…”

Une reconstruction progressiste du passé : Renaissance et Risorgimento dans « Old Pictures in Florence » de Robert Browning
Published 2018-12-01“…From an aesthetic as from a political viewpoint, the fact that it remained unfinished is precisely what gives the work of art its main strength, inasmuch as it leaves open the necessary space for a taking up, a progress rooted in the ambitions of the past, and the promise of a political evolution which uses the past, against all reactionary fantasies, as the model for a progressive momentum. …”

The sport and Lithuanian national identity
Published 2006-06-01“…The latter are becoming an object of interest for a very small part of society (the only exception might be the Lithuanian basketball league super final, which usually reflects the animosity between the two biggest towns: Vilnius and Kaunas). In turn, the marginal fan groups, which kept a clear nationalistic orientation from Soviet times, have an ideological potential to migrate towards Euro-skepticism, anti-globalism, and xenophobia. …”
