The Anglophobia of this soldier, one of the founders of the Action Française, can be ascribed to the nationalism of the extreme right at the end of the century: after the defeat of 1870, which led to the loss of Alsace-Lorraine and the advent of the German Empire, France was to come up against the British in its colonial aims at a time when Africa was being divided amongst European countries. …”
