Rapid diagnosis of bacterial vaginosis using machine-learning-assisted surface-enhanced Raman spectroscopy of human vaginal fluids
Published 2025-01-01“…ABSTRACT Bacterial vaginosis (BV) is an abnormal gynecological condition caused by the overgrowth of specific bacteria in the vagina. This study aims to develop a novel method for BV detection by integrating surface-enhanced Raman scattering (SERS) with machine learning (ML) algorithms. …”

Transposon-sequencing across multiple Mycobacterium abscessus isolates reveals significant functional genomic diversity among strains
Published 2025-02-01“…We identified 259 core essential genes across the 21 clinical isolates and 425 differentially required genes, representing ~10% of the Mab core genome. We also identified genes whose requirements were subspecies, lineage, and isolate-specific. …”

Legionella pneumophila IrsA, a novel, iron-regulated exoprotein that facilitates growth in low-iron conditions and modulates biofilm formation
Published 2025-01-01“…In this study, we uncovered a novel, secreted protein that is highly iron-regulated, promotes L. pneumophila’s growth in low-iron media, and impacts biofilm formation. We also identified uncharacterized, IrsA-related proteins in other important human and animal pathogens. …”

Infection of nonclassic monocytes by respiratory syncytial virus induces an imbalance in the CD4+ T-cell subset response
Published 2025-01-01“…We found that RSV efficiently infects CD16+ monocytes, but not CD16- monocytes, via cocultures of CD4+ T-cells with RSV-infected CD16+ monocytes, inhibits Treg cell proliferation and increases Th2 cell frequency, suggesting that RSV causes an imbalance in the CD4+ T-cell subset by primarily infecting CD16+ monocytes. Our data also revealed that IL-1β and IL-10 are key cytokines responsible for the activities of RSV-infected CD16+ monocytes. …”

Optimized methods for the targeted surveillance of extended-spectrum beta-lactamase-producing Escherichia coli in human stool
Published 2025-01-01“…Here, we compared different steps in the microbiological workflow to determine the impact different pre-enrichment broths, pre-enrichment incubation times, selection in pre-enrichment, selective plating, and DNA extraction methods had on recovering ESBL-EC from human stool samples, with the aim to acquire high-quality DNA for sequencing and genomic epidemiology. …”

Immunological mechanisms of tuberculosis susceptibility in TB-infected individuals with type 2 diabetes mellitus: insights from mycobacterial growth inhibition assay and cytokine a...
Published 2025-01-01“…By demonstrating that T2DM individuals exhibit a weakened ability to control M.tb growth and a compromised cytokine profile, the research underscores the need for better diagnostic tools, such as the mycobacterial growth inhibition assay (MGIA), to identify those at greater risk of progression to active TB. The findings also highlight the importance of integrated care strategies for managing both T2DM and TB, particularly in TB-endemic regions, and point to the need for further research to develop more effective interventions tailored to this vulnerable population.…”

A gut-derived Streptococcus salivarius produces the novel nisin variant designated nisin G and inhibits Fusobacterium nucleatum in a model of the human distal colon microbiome
Published 2025-02-01“…The structural nisin G peptide differs from the prototypical nisin A with respect to seven amino acids (Ile4Tyr, Ala15Val, Gly18Ala, Asn20His, Met21Leu, His27Asn, and His31Ile), including differences that have not previously been associated with a natural nisin variant. …”

Prospective clinical performance of CoVarScan in identifying SARS-CoV-2 Omicron subvariants
Published 2025-01-01“…Fast and accurate identification of sensitive viral lineages would allow tailored use of monoclonal antibodies that may otherwise have been pulled from the market due to rising overall resistance. Rapid results also allow public health officials to make policy decisions in time to reduce morbidity and mortality for sensitive populations such as patients who are immunocompromised or have significant medical comorbidities.…”
