Association Between Dietary Taste Preferences and Primary Ovarian Insufficiency: A Mendelian Randomization Study
Published 2025-04-01“…The analyses were visualized by plotting scatterplots, funnel plots, and leave-one-out plots. Results: IVW analysis showed that preference for sweet food (p=0.034), preference for cake (p=0.040), preference for white wine (p=0.048) was positively associated with the risk of developing POI, preference for bitter food (p=0.048), preference for Mackerel (p=0.031), preference for Gherkins (p=0.024), preference for Cream (p= 0.009) and preference for Soya milk (p=0.042) were negatively associated with the risk of developing POI, while there was no significant association between preference for salty food (p=0.350) and preference for spicy food (p=0.827) and POI.Conclusion: This study suggests that food preference is a heritable trait, that food preference is the primary reason people choose their food intake, and that alterations in taste-related receptor genes may affect ovarian function. …”

Impact of developmental language disorders on mental health and well-being across the lifespan: a qualitative study including the perspectives of UK adults with DLD and Australian...
Published 2024-10-01“…Objective This study aims to explore the educational, occupational and socioemotional experiences of people with developmental language disorder (DLD) across the lifespan to gain insight into risk and protective factors for mental health.Design Qualitative analysis of focus groups and written submissions. Data were combined and analysed using Braun and Clarke’s reflexive thematic analysis approach within a critical realist framework.Setting Southeast England and Western Australia.Participants Six adults with DLD from England and five speech-language therapists from Western Australia participated in focus groups and/or contributed written responses to the research team. Results We developed four themes: ‘perspectives on diagnosis and living with an invisible disability’ explores participants’ perspectives on diagnosis, the difficulty getting a diagnosis and perceptions of DLD as widely misunderstood; ‘school struggles and self-esteem from past to present’ details school experiences and their impact on mental health; ‘DLD across the lifespan’ explores DLD in adulthood with a focus on workplace difficulties, emotional well-being and mental health; ‘A sense of belonging: communication, connection and support’ provides a lived experience account into the social participation difficulties of adults with DLD and the importance of social support. Conclusions and implications Adults with DLD may experience poor self-esteem, anxiety and depression. …”

Targeting β2-adrenergic receptor reduces UV-induced cutaneous damage and inflammation in a murine model
Published 2025-08-01“…Preclinical studies demonstrated that the β-adrenergic receptor antagonists (β-blockers) inhibit skin damage and cancer development induced by ultraviolet (UV) radiation, but the mechanism remains unknown. β2-adrenergic receptor (β2-AR) is the predominant adrenergic receptor expressed on skin keratinocytes and immune cells that bind to catecholamines, but its function in UV-induced skin lesions is unknown. Here, the role of β2-AR in UV-induced acute skin damage was investigated using a β2-AR knockout (KO) mouse model. …”
