Latencies of conditioned vocal responses to hearing test tones in killer whales (Orcinus orca) by Jared Stephens, Alyssa W. Accomando, Alyssa W. Accomando, Kayla Nease, Kayla Nease, Brian K. Branstetter, Brian K. Branstetter, Todd R. Robeck

    Published 2025-01-01
“…Understanding the effect of sound frequency and level on perceived loudness would improve prediction and modeling of anthropogenic noise impacts on marine mammals.MethodsIn this study, behavioral hearing tests conducted with two killer whales were analyzed to capture conditioned vocal response latency, which is the time between the onset of the acoustic signal and the onset of the response (i.e., reaction time).ResultsThe results showed that vocal reaction times decreased with increasing sensation level (i.e., sound pressure level above the baseline hearing threshold), while the effect of frequency on reaction time varied between the subjects. …”

Exploring the multifaceted correlates of household decision-making autonomy among married women in Cameroon by Daniel Amoak, Yujiro Sano, Satveer Dhillon, George N. Chidimbah Munthali, Roger Antabe, Isaac Luginaah

    Published 2025-07-01
“…Despite this importance, however, very few studies explore the prevalence and correlates of women’s household decision-making autonomy in countries in sub-Saharan Africa, including Cameroon. Methods Using the 2018 Cameroon Demographic and Health Survey, this study employs a binary logistic regression analysis to explore the demographic, locational, and socioeconomic determinants of women’s household decision-making autonomy. …”

2D and 3D visualization of herbaceous plant–plant contact zones using high‐resolution X‐ray computed tomography (HRXCT) by Hildah K. Kithinji, Olivier Dayou, Léo Botton‐Divet, Thomas Stach, Susann Wicke

    Published 2025-03-01
“…An in‐depth understanding of parasite–host interactions is required to develop species‐specific and ecologically sustainable parasite management methods. The non‐invasive visualization of herbaceous contact zones, applicable to diverse parasite–host pathosystems presented in this study, brings methodological advance to the research of biotic interactions between crops and plant parasites belonging to the most devastating parasitic plant family (Orobanchaceae). …”

Video temporal perception characteristics based just noticeable difference model by Yafen1 XING, Haibing YIN, Hongkui WANG, Qionghua LUO

    Published 2022-02-01
“…The existing temporal domain JND(just noticeable distortion) models are not sufficient to depict the interaction between temporal parameters and HVS characteristics, leading to insufficient accuracy of the spatial-temporal JND model. To solve this problem, feature parameters that can accurately describe the temporal characteristics of the video were explored and extracted, as well as a homogenization method for fusing heterogeneous feature parameters, and the temporal domain JND model based on this was improved. The feature parameters were investigated including foreground and background motion, temporal duration along the motion trajectory, residual fluctuation intensity along motion trajectory and adjacent inter-frame prediction residual, etc., which were used to characterize the temporal characteristics.Probability density functions for these feature parameters in the perception sense according to the HVS(human visual system) characteristics were proposed, and uniformly mapping the heterogeneous feature parameters to the scales of self-information and information entropy to achieve a homogeneous fusion measurement. The coupling method of visual attention and masking was explored from the perspective of energy distribution, and the temporal-domain JND weight model was constructed accordingly. On the basis of the spatial JND threshold, the temporal domain weights was integrated to develop a more accurate spatial-temporal JND model. In order to evaluate the performance of the spatiotemporal JND model, a subjective quality evaluation experiment was conducted.Experimental results justify the effectiveness of the proposed model.…”
