Characterization and Differentiation of Chemical Heterogeneity in Humic Substances by Continuous Intrinsic Proton Affinity Distribution by Zhang Hongxia, Dong Wenming, Huang Meide, Tao Zuyi

    Published 2002-05-01
“…The chemical heterogeneity of proton binding on humic substances was studied via continuous intrinsic proton affinity distributions calculated using the condensation approximation from the master curves for two soil fulvic acids (FAs), one soil humic acid (HA) and one fulvic acid obtained from weathered coal. The master curves, i.e. plots of θ T,H (the overall protonation degree) versus Hs (the proton concentration in the diffuse double layer), were obtained from potentiometric titration curves at three ionic strengths. …”

Study on Water Repellency Modification of Strongly Expansive Soil by DING Junhao, CHAI Linchun, ZHANG Jianjun

    Published 2022-01-01
“…To study the inhibition effect of water-repellent sand on the expansion rate of expansive soil, this study takes the strongly expansive soil of weathered slopes as an example and adds octadecylamine into sand as water repellent agents to improve the expansive soil. The expansion rate tests are carried out on the ring-knife samples with 27 times of compaction, and the expansion and contraction characteristics of modified expansive soil under the optimal water content are revealed. The results indicate that the natural soil changes from hydrophilic to water-repellent upon the addition of water-repellent sand into expansive soil, and the water repellency is significantly enhanced. The optimal water content of the five modified expansive soils decreases with the increase in water repellency, and the expansion rate is reduced from 35% to 9%,which means the expansion characteristics are greatly inhibited. It is feasible to restrain the expansion and seepage of strongly expansive soil by adding water-repellent sand (octadecylamine content of 0.04%).…”
