“…I have addressed this matter elsewhere, in my essay ‘Faith in a Practical Epistemology: On Collective Creativity in Theatre’ (Predicaments of Culture in South Africa, 2005), but on this occasion, while watching the documentary, it was Nietzsche’s view in Contra Wagner which proved the trigger, namely, that ‘Wagner’s art is sick. …”

    Published 2025-02-01
“… A fim de explicitar um aspecto singular da relação filósofica de Simone de Beauvoir para com Nietzsche, este estudo busca elaborar um possível desenvolvimento da crítica da filósofa – que ela apresentou somente uma indicação, em Le Théâtre existentialiste [1947] e em Por uma moral da ambiguidade [1947] – à doutrina da vontade de poder do filósofo, cujo cerne seria o de que essa doutrina reflete e expressa um solipsismo existencial. …”

Studying Problems of Art Interpretation in Music at University of Culture by S. Yu. Lysenko

    Published 2018-07-01
“…It became clear that traditional Art studies using conventional conceptual system are not ready for up-to-date reading of the classical heritage and there are no clear criteria for assessment of the topical artistic solutions for classics, especially in musical theatre. The range of interpreters’ methods are rather wide – from authentic reconstructions to free stage variations and games with author’s meanings. …”

Shakespeare revisité, entre fidélité et parodie : de La Nuit des Rois à Shake de Dan Jemmett by Isabelle Schwartz-Gastine

    Published 2004-10-01
“…William Shakespeare himself was a master of re-writing older material as he abundantly used this technique, which was totally justified at the Renaissance, to compose his poems or plays, from various sources whether literary (prose or verse), historical, or any other—and sometimes most unusual—background. The play I am considering in this paper is a very recent re-writing in English by Dan Jemmett (Peter Brook’s son-in-law), but performed in Marie-Paul Remo’s French translation at the Vidy Theatre in Lausanne during the 2001 season. It is called Shake, with a modest sub-title « around Twelfth Night », but which is indeed at the heart of the topic.Through the exploration of three themes: symmetry (of situations, of twin binarities), love’s misunderstanding, and music, I will argue that this comedy, whose title is a mix between the name of the Bard and the etymological meaning of the verb “to shake” as far as traditions are concerned, is faithful to the spirit (rather than the letter) of the Shakespearean original in a very healthy comic vein.It is not worth wondering if the spectators fully understood the meaning of this comedy in which the four actors change roles all the time: their frequent bursts of laughter clearly showed that they enjoyed the spirit of the comedy, whether they knew Twelfth Night or not.…”

Embodying the Spirit (<i>meyppāṭu</i>): A <i>puttiṇai</i> Perspective by Nirmal Selvamony

    Published 2024-12-01
“…I explain the early Tamil idea of <i>meyppāṭu</i> as a kind of action, which consists of embodying the spirit, and show how it manifests itself in ordinary emotional experience, in love at first sight, in emoting in theatre, and in spirit possession. The analytical tool I employ is the concept of <i>mūviṭam</i>, or the personaic triad, the central concept in the theory called <i>puttiṇai</i>. …”
