Les mots maoris dans The Bone People de Keri Hulme : exotisme et intimisme
Published 2015-02-01“…This paper shows how the use of Maori words in the English text may be accused of participating in a strategy of “exoticisation” of the text, though they still have a strong symbolic meaning within the economy of the narrative. …”

Life on board ship and cultural intimacy. Notes from the Central Mediterranean
Published 2023-06-01“…Today, different “currents” – cultural, political, and symbolic – cross the Mediterranean. When they meet aboard seagoing vessels, these currents construct a highly diverse range of shared spaces.Exploring both the macro-structure and some of the micro-practices that constitute these spaces, I attempt to point up some of the contradictions – between humanitarian logic and activist demands, between efficiency and processes of dehumanization, between formal rationality and the unpredictability of events – that arise in the construction of a sense of belonging on board a large SAR ship.…”

Joint reduction of peak-to-average power ratio and out-of-band power based on subcarrier weighting in OFDM systems
Published 2012-06-01“…Considering the conflict of PAPR and OBP reductions in OFDM systems,a new method based on subcarrier weighting was proposed for the joint reduction. The symbols on subcarriers were multiplied by optimal weighting vector to reduce PAPR and OBP jointly, and an improved GA was used to calculate the optimal weighting vector for lower complexity. It was more effective in spectrum utility and did not need any transmission of side information.Furthermore, with trade-off parameter,it offered more flexibility to control the reduction by changing the relative weighting of the two optimization criteria. The simulation results indicate that, compared with a system that performs two separate optimization steps, the proposed method can significantly enhance the amount of PAPR and OBP reduction with lower computation complexity. It is simple to implement, which makes it very practical.…”

Published 2018-06-01“…For the first image it is the usual instrumentality of communication (rossicum is an addition and an excess of information within a Polish text), for the second image the instrumentality acquires unambiguously pragmatic features and the rossicum becomes an instrument of effective action, and for the third picture the instrumentality of Russian elements sets in motion the symbolic-cognitive (creating a sense) function of Russian in Polish text.…”

Unfinished buildings, a new point of departure. Designing difference for a sustainable future
Published 2020-12-01“…Contemporary unfinished buildings, which represent a widespread sort of abandoned built environment around the globe, have only recently shaken off the taboo to which they have been relegated by their inescapable condition as symbols of failure. The theoretical connotations attributed to them often fluctuate between the mystifying poles of exaltation and demonization; without discussing these, and looking at trends that can be identified in certain works over the last decades, the article aims to contribute to defining an analytical and design-based approach. …”
