Antimicrobial Activities of Polysaccharide-Rich Extracts from the Irish Seaweed <i>Alaria esculenta</i>, Generated Using Green and Conventional Extraction Technologies, Against Foo...
Published 2025-01-01“…This study investigates the antimicrobial activity of compounds produced by the Irish seaweed <i>Alaria esculenta</i> against <i>Escherichia coli</i> and <i>Listeria innocua</i>, bacterial species which are relevant for food safety. Microwave-assisted extraction (MAE), ultrasound-assisted extraction (UAE), ultrasound–microwave-assisted extraction (UMAE), and conventional extraction technologies (maceration) were applied to generate extracts from <i>A. esculenta</i>, followed by their preliminary chemical composition (total phenolic content, total protein content, total soluble sugars) and antimicrobial activity (with minimum inhibitory concentration determined by broth microdilution methods), examining also the molecular weight distribution (via high performance size exclusion chromatography) and oligosaccharide fraction composition (via high-performance liquid chromatography) of the polysaccharides, as they were the predominant compounds in these extracts, aiming to elucidate structure–function relationships. …”

Exogenous cystine increases susceptibility of drug-resistant Salmonella to gentamicin by promoting oxidation of glutathione metabolism and imbalance of intracellular redox levels
Published 2025-02-01“…The multifunctional electronic enzyme marker was used to determine intracellular reduced glutathione/oxidized glutathione (GSH/GSSG), ferrous iron on (Fe2+), and reactive oxygen species (ROS) levels. The expression of glutathione and stress genes was determined using real-time quantitative PCR.ResultWe confirmed that exogenous cystine increased the lethal effect of gentamicin against strain S. enterica Typhimurium (ATCC 14028) and other clinically resistant Salmonella serotypes. …”

Nano-Zinc Oxide Can Enhance the Tolerance of Apple Rootstock M9-T337 Seedlings to Saline Alkali Stress by Initiating a Variety of Physiological and Biochemical Pathways
Published 2025-01-01“…ZnO NPs can balance the osmotic adjustment system by increasing the contents of soluble protein (SP), soluble sugar (SS), proline (Pro) and starch, and can also enhance the activities of enzymatic (SOD, POD, and CAT) and non-enzymatic antioxidant enzymes (APX, AAO, GR, and MDHAR) to enhance the scavenging ability of reactive oxygen species (H2O2, O2•−), ultimately reducing oxidative damage; ZnO NPs promoted the growth of M9-T337 seedlings under saline alkali stress by synergistically responding to auxin (IAA), gibberellin (GA3), zeatin (ZT) and abscisic acid (ABA). …”
