Phenotypic Plasticity in Gut Length in the Planktivorous Filter-Feeding Silver Carp (Hypophthalmichthys molitrix) by Zhixin Ke, Xie Ping, Longgen Guo

    Published 2008-01-01
“…Meanwhile, silver carp adjusted their gut length to match the digestive requirements of food when exposed to different food resources. In the main growth seasons (from April to October), silver carp significantly increased their relative gut length when feeding on more phytoplankton in 2005 (p < 0.01, 9.23 ± 1.80 in 2004 and 10.77 ± 2.05 in 2005, respectively). …”

What was Killing Babies in Rostock? An Investigation of Infant Mortality Using Individual-Level Cause-of-Death Data, 1800–1904 by Michael Mühlichen, Laura Ann Cilek

    Published 2024-07-01
“…Our analyses also reveal that water-food borne diseases were underestimated in Rostock, even though symptomatic disease terms such as convulsions and teething, that were frequently recorded over much of the 19th century, had deviating seasonality patterns and thus cannot entirely refer to this disease group but rather to a wide field of different diseases. …”

Nitrate Relationships between Stream Baseflow, Well Water, and Land Use in the Tomorrow-Waupaca Watershed by Henry Lin, Rebecca Cook, Byron Shaw

    Published 2001-01-01
“…This indicates that stream baseflow may be valid for monitoring mean ground water quality in watersheds predominantly fed by ground water, where much of the stream nitrate is believed to originate from ground water. Analysis of seasonal variation in the stream data showed that winter nitrate concentrations were higher than summer concentrations, implying that winter stream monitoring may be more critical for the assessment of overall ground water quality in the watershed. …”

    Published 2022-01-01
“…Although the peak incidence of transmission is in the summer and fall, this does not exclude transmission during other seasons. Due to the increasing prevalence of Powassan virus in Lyme-endemic areas particularly in the Midwest and Northeast, United States, patients with an unexplained altered mental status in these regions should be screened for Powassan virus, regardless of the time of year.…”

Simulation and Analysis of Water Consumption for Rice Production in Downstream Lancanng-Mekong River Basin under the Influence of Climate Change by XIE Shimeng, LIU Dengfeng, LIU Hui, HU Hongchang, DONG Zhiqiang, WANG Tianci, MING Guanghui

    Published 2024-01-01
“…Agriculture water consumption is the main sector of socio-economic water consumption. The impact of climate change on agriculture water consumption may change the situation of water supply and demand in a region. The downstream Lancang-Mekong River Basin is selected as the study area.Based on the ERA5-Land dataset and the latest CMIP6 climate projection data, three emission scenarios (SSP1-2.6,SSP2-4.5,and SSP5-8.5) are selected in this study, and the AquaCrop model is used to separate non-productive soil evaporation from productive crop transpiration. The total transpiration during the rice growth period is taken as water consumption for rice production, and the historical and subsequent water consumption for rice production in the downstream Lancang-Mekong River Basin is simulated. The changes in water consumption for rice production and its correlation with temperature, precipitation, and CO2 concentration are analyzed. The results show that the water consumption for rice production in the downstream Lancang-Mekong River Basin is manifested as more water consumption in the north and less water consumption in the south and has an overall decreasing trend annually. The trend is more obvious under the SSP5-8.5 scenario. In the SSP5-8.5 scenario, water consumption for rice production will reduce by 29.7% in the downstream Lancang-Mekong Basin in the far future.Compared with temperature and precipitation, the strongest correlation is found between water consumption for rice production and CO2 concentration. In the far future of the SSP5-8.5 scenario, the correlation coefficient is-0.875 in Thailand and less than-0.9 in other countries in all seasons.…”
