Physiological variables associated with the development of acute mountain sickness at the South Pole
Published 2013-07-01“…Objectives The Antarctic Study of Altitude Physiology (ASAP) investigated variables associated with the development of AMS in adults experiencing rapid passive transport to altitude by airplane.Design Our prospective observational trial collected data, including personal history, anthropometrics, vital signs, blood samples and pulmonary function, at sea level and at altitude. Statistical analysis utilised independent sample t tests to investigate between-group differences (p<0.05) and a forward, step-wise binary logisitic regression analysis was performed.Participants Of 248 eligible ASAP participants, those who did not use acetazolamide (N=98) were included in the present analysis.Primary outcome measures The diagnosis of AMS using the Lake Louise Symptom Score. Results Analysis of participants not using acetazolamide (n=90) found 30 participants developed AMS and 60 participants did not. …”

Area, volume and ELA changes of West Greenland local glaciers and ice caps from 1985–2020
Published 2024-01-01“…Although less monitored and studied than the ice sheet, local glaciers and ice caps along the coast of Greenland are substantial contributors to meltwater runoff and sea level rise. This study analyses the cumulative area, ice mass and Equilibrium Line Altitude (ELA) change that occurred on 4100 glaciers and ice caps in West Greenland from 1985 to approximately 2020, using remotely sensed data and including glaciers smaller than 1 km2 in the calculations. …”

Shipwreck Architecture
Published 2025-02-01“…This trajectory of ideas is then projected into a creative project: a speculative history of shipwreck architecture where the cutting edge of biological research is projected into a technological future when the distant aims of today’s technology are ancient history: when the first generations of grown buildings are preserved as ruins, when giant decommissioned carbon-capture factories drift like ghost ships across lakes of their inky waste, when people remember when shipwrecks caused by the hazards of rising sea levels were later exposed by sinking sea levels and converted into hotels and theatres, and finally, when these theatrical memories provoke such nostalgia that shipwreck architecture would be replicated and fabricated. …”
