From Science to Parliament: How Empathy Became a Political Concept in Finland by Martin Pettersson

    Published 2024-12-01
“…Politicians talking about empathy, while drawing on the scientific roots of the concept in psychology, still apply it rhetorically as if empathy were another word for sympathy, albeit in an improved, rational form. Parliamentary debates display how politicians use empathy to oscillate between numerous perceived dichotomies, such as nature and nurture, or individual and collective, depending on the rhetorical situation and without scientific precision. …”

John of Salisbury’s Policraticus – Mirror of the Prince between Otium and Negotium by Oana-Corina Filip

    Published 2018-12-01
“…Distincţia dintre formele corespunzătoare şi cele necorespunzătoare de otium şi negotium este determinată de un principiu raţional în viziunea lui Ioan. Cu toate acestea, în context istoric mai larg, şi un număr de indicii intratextuale ridică suspiciunea că Policraticus ar fi putut funcţiona, de fapt, ca o satiră la adresa lui Henric al II-lea, şi ar fi avut scopuri educative pentru Ludovic al VII-lea.…”

Study on the Relationship Between Groundwater Depth and Land Use Change Based on Indicator Kriging Method by XU Yueyue, SU Tao, LEI Bo, WANG Lei

    Published 2021-01-01
“…It is very important to study the temporal and spatial variation of groundwater depth for the rational development and utilization of groundwater resources, the promotion of crop growth and the prevention and control of land salinization.Taking Jiefangzha of Hetao Irrigation Area as the research area, this paper analyzes the spatial-temporal variation of groundwater depth in different irrigation periods by the indicator Kriging interpolation, and explores the relationship between different groundwater depth and land use type change with land use type classification map.The results show that:①The annual variation of groundwater depth in the Jiefangzha irrigation area presents a double-peak curve. The minimum value appears in May and June, while the maximum value appears in August and September. On the whole, the groundwater depth in the irrigation area shows an increasing trend in each year, and the groundwater depth gradually increases from southwest to northeast, with the characteristics of shallow buried area increasing and deep buried area decreasing;②The groundwater depth changes from 1.82 m to 1.99 m,which is conducive to the stable growth of cultivated land, forest and grassland in irrigation area. From the perspective of regional ecological environment change, when the groundwater depth is greater than 2 m,there is an adverse transformation of land degradation.…”

Folded and Unfolded Conformations of Proteins Involved in Pancreatic Cancer: a Layman's Guide by Jerónimo Bravo, José L. Neira

    Published 2010-01-01
“…Since cancer deregulation and progression are associated with changes in at least one biochemical pathway, the knowledge of the structure of the proteins involved in such routes seems to be crucial in order to understand how this cancer progresses and, more importantly, to design more efficient and rationally designed drugs. Relay selection algorithm based on selfish behavior analysis in ultra-dense D2D by Yijun WANG, Youxu ZHANG, Dakun LIU, Guifen CHEN

    Published 2021-04-01
“…In ultra-dense D2D communication, the current relay selection schemes mainly assume that the relay device has the initiative to participate in data forwarding, but some rational relay devices may delay or refuse to forward due to their own considerations, thus affecting the user experience. From the perspective of selfish behavior of relay devices, a method to identify selfish relay devices in D2D communication was proposed, and then an ultra-dense D2D relay selection algorithm based on selfish behavior analysis was proposed.Firstly, three relay identification attribute factors, namely joint interest degree (JID), forwarding history ratio (FHR) and relay physical state (RPS) were defined, and their weights were calculated by triangular fuzzy function to identify relay devices with selfish behavior.Secondly, based on the TOPSIS (technique for order of preference by similarity to ideal solution) method, the final relay equipment selection scheme relay was realized.Simulation results show that the proposed algorithm can identify selfish relay devices more effectively in D2D communication.Compared with other relay selection algorithms, the proposed algorithm has made significant progress in the aspects of D2D communication forwarding success rate, system average throughput and average time delay.…”
