Assessment of Traffic-Related Ambient Air Particulate Matter (PM) Levels in Douala, Cameroon
Published 2024-01-01“…A challenge in many Sub-Saharan African (SSA) cities is the absence of air quality monitoring due to the high expense and technical expertise needed. Air pollution around the world is becoming a societal problem, and developed countries have all the necessary information about the levels of most air pollutants; however, underdeveloped countries have inadequate information on air quality. …”

Distribution Characteristics and Environmental Response of Diatoms Deposited in Reservoirs in the Source Region of Le'an River
Published 2024-01-01“…At present, the study of heavy metal pollution in the Le'an River Basin should be explored. To fully elucidate the environmental characteristics and change-driven processes of reservoirs in the source region of the Le'an River, this paper employs Qinghua and Shijing reservoirs with different ecological environments and development backgrounds as research objects.Experimental records of diatom species and physicochemical indicators in sedimentary column cores are conducted, and meanwhile combined with modern monitoring data and multivariate statistical methods, environmental characteristics driving factors affecting changes in sedimentary diatom assemblages and sedimentary environment in reservoirs are analyzed. The results show that nutrient levels in the reservoirs gradually increase with the depth to the surface, and the sediment pollution evaluation also reveals the collection process of nutrients.Universal and cleaning indicator species have been replaced by fouling-tolerant and eutrophication indicator species of sedimentary diatoms, with representative species being Achnanthidium minutissima and Navicula minima. The multivariate statistical analysis results show that TP, TN, TP, and TOC are the main driving factors of diatom community structure distribution in Qinghua and Shijing reservoirs respectively (p<0.05).Box plot analysis results of 18 diatom indices reveal that CEE and LOBO indices are screened and show sound evaluation suitability and correlation. The input of exogenous materials into the reservoirs is affected by different anthropogenic practices to drive the succession of the diatom community, with a trend towards eutrophication in both reservoirs.…”

Application of MIKE11 Model in River Network Area of Pearl River Delta for Water Quality Improvement
Published 2023-01-01“…The water quality improvement in the river network area of the Pearl River Delta is an important part of the comprehensive management of the river basin, and it is necessary to study the compliance of water quality improvement measures.Taking the Beicun river system of Nanhai district,Foshan city in the Pearl River Delta as an example, this paper chooses COD,NH3-N and TP as the characteristic indexes based on the MIKE11 one-dimensional hydrodynamic water quality model to study the hydrodynamic force of rivers and water quality improvement effect under different engineering schemes. The results show that measures such as pollution interception, silt removal, and water diversion can improve the overall water quality of the studied river reach in varying degrees, and thus the water quality improvement is achieved. As the projects of pollution interception and fresh water are implemented, the water quality in typical cross sections of main rivers in the Beicun river system can meet the requirement of class Ⅴ.After the implementation of water diversion and transfer,as well as CSO storage pool, the pollutant concentration in the observed cross section of seriously polluted rivers decreases by more than 70%.As a result, this paper can provide a basis for improving water quality in the river network area of the Pearl River Delta.…”

Health of Fish Communities in the Lower Reaches of the Dongjiang River
Published 2023-01-01“…Dongjiang River is an important water source and ecological corridor in the Guangdong-Hong Kong-Macao Greater Bay Area.Understanding the health of fish communities in the lower reaches of this river is vital for the water ecological protection of the basin. This paper investigates the fish in the lower reaches of the Dongjiang River, and the abundance index (dM) and Shannon Weiner index (H′) are selected to evaluate the community health, and the relationship between them and water quality factors is explored. The results show that there are 7 orders,19 families,43 genera, and 50 species of fish found in the lower reaches of this river,of which Cypriniformes is the largest and Perciformes is the second, with 10 species of exotic fish. There is a significant or extremely significant negative correlation between the health of fish communities and water pollution factors such as CODCr,BOD5,and TP,indicating that water pollution affects the health of fish communities. The river encroachment, rigid transformation, and the construction of gate and dam facilities disrupting habitats have also adversely influenced fish communities.Exotic fish have been found in most sampling sites and are more dominant in polluted rivers. It is necessary to develop scientific management strategies and measures from various aspects, including improving river water quality, restoring the diversity and connectivity of fish habitats, and strengthening the management and prevention of exotic fish. …”
