Revisiting the 10th‐Century Eldgjá Eruption: Modeling the Climatic and Environmental Impacts by Herman F. Fuglestvedt, Imogen Gabriel, Michael Sigl, Thorvaldur Thordarson, Kirstin Krüger

    Published 2025-01-01
“…Earth system modeling of this scenario under pre‐industrial conditions reveals a compound event with maximum northern extratropics surface cooling of ∼2°C in summer‐autumn of 939 and 940 CE, prolonged Arctic sea ice growth, and large‐scale precipitation changes, concurrent with stratospheric ozone depletion and elevated pollution. These results imply that the combined climatic and environmental effects of the Eldgjá eruption may have significantly impacted human populations at the time.…”

Study on Ecological Security Assessment of Dongjiang River Basin in Jiangxi Province Based on PSFR Model by LIU Huili, ZHA Dongping, FENG Minglei, WAN Ying

    Published 2021-01-01
“…In order to find out the ecological security situation of Dongjiang River Basin in Jiangxi Province, and formulate targeted ecological protection measures for protecting the clear water of the Dongjiang River, this paper determines the weight of indexes through the “Pressure-State-Function-Risk”(PSFR) model and analytic hierarchy process (AHP),establishes and optimizes the ecological security assessment system of Dongjiang River Basin in Jiangxi Province, and combines with “3S” technology and expert support system to evaluate the ecological security of Dongjiang River Basin in Jiangxi Province. The results show that:The ecological security index (ESI) of Dongjiang River Basin is 74.80,and the ecological security state of the Dongjiang River Basin is relatively safe. The main environmental problems in the river basin are the disconnection of the river system, the failure of the water environment quality to reach the standard, the reduction of the aquatic biological resources and diversity, etc. The severe human activities, the high density of hydraulic structures, the potential pollution of mining and orchard development, the degradation of important habitat area, the degradation of wetland area and the weakening of watershed ecological service function are the causes. On the basis of the assessment, the main factors affecting the ecological security of the river basin are put forward in this paper, which provides technical basis for the formulation of the next protection plan, and the index system has a strong reference significance to the fine management of ecological risk control in other basins.…”

Hydrochemical Characteristic and Water Quality Evaluation of Shallow Groundwater in Guangzhou by YUAN Shengyan, ZHU Aiping, ZENG Hongping, FENG Xiaolei, HUANG Bobo, LI Nian

    Published 2022-01-01
“…To investigate the hydrochemical characteristics and water quality of the shallow groundwater in Guangzhou and the potential human health risks posed by the nitrates in the shallow groundwater, this study collected 132 shallow groundwater samples in Guangzhou during November 2014 to February 2015.The hydrochemical characteristics of the shallow groundwater in Guangzhou were analyzed by the Piper trilinear diagram. The water quality of the groundwater and the health risks caused by nitrate pollution were assessed by the Nemerow comprehensive index method and a health risk evaluation model, respectively. The results showed that the main chemicals in the shallow groundwater in the study area were Ca-Na-HCO3,Ca-HCO3,Ca-Mg-HCO3,and Ca-Na-HCO3-Cl.The groundwater quality was generally poor, and manganese, ammonia nitrogen, nitrates, and pH were the main factors behind the poor water quality of the groundwater. The results of health risk assessment revealed that the health risks for children exposed by nitrates via drinking water intake and skin contact were both significantly higher than those for adult females and males.Furthermore, the health risks caused by drinking water intake were much higher than those caused by skin contact. Those all indicated that the health risks exposed by nitrates for different groups of people in the study area were mainly through drinking water intake. Therefore, serious attention should be paid to the potential human health risks posed by long-term drinking of the groundwater in the study area.…”
